Senior Citizens Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program

Qualifying seniors may apply for this benefit between
February 1st and April 30th annually.

Nevada offers a Senior Citizens Tax Assistance/Rental Rebate Program to persons 62 years of age on or before June 30, 2009 whose 2008 total household income including Social Security was $28,058 or less. Applicants must have lived and paid rent or property taxes continuously in Nevada since the July 1st preceding the application deadline.

This program applies to any person meeting the age, residency and income requirements regardless of whether you own your home, rent an apartment or house, or live in a manufactured home.

The filing period for the Tax Assistance/Rental Rebate Program is from February 1st to April 30th each year. The amount of benefit depends on household income and taxes or rent paid.

The Assessor's Office administers this program and the principal requirements are:

  • Must be 62 years of age by June 30th of the year he/she applies.
  • 2008 total household income must be $28,058 or less including Social Security.
  • Must have been a full-time resident of Douglas County from July 1 of the previous year.

The Nevada Department of Health and Human services, Division for Aging Services, requires first time applicants to provide proof of age (birth certificate, Nevada driver's license or I.D. or some other legal document. Out-of-state driver's licenses are not accepted). All applicants must provide proof of income; renters must also provide proof of rent paid. All types of income including Social Security must be included.

The filing for this program opens February 1st and closes April 30th. The State will mail rebate applications to everyone who applied and qualified the previous year. The Assessor's Office can provide the forms for new applicants upon request after February 1st of each year.

Refund checks to qualified applicants are normally mailed by October 31st of each year.
